Becket's Chapel

Becket's Chapel in Wymondham is a Grade 1 listed building, the earliest parts of which date from the 12th century. It is one of Wymondham's most important heritage assets.

The Chapel reopened in July 2023 following a programme of restoration and repair by Historic Norfolk.

Our aim is to make the chapel a multifunctional cultural and heritage facility that can operate year round.

Becket's Chapel is available to hire for meetings, concerts, talks, wedding ceremony celebrations, markets, receptions and other activities. From May to November each year it is home to Wymondham Arts.

Phase1of the restoration (October 2022 to July 2023) involved repairs to the fabric of the building to make it watertight, structurally sound and in a usable condition.

Planning permission was granted on 23 October 2024 for phase 2 which will include an upgrade to the kitchen and toilet facilities, making the chapel accessible to all, and a new extension on the south side. This will house a café and a Visitor Information Point, and provide solar power through roof incorporated solar panels. The installation of a ground or air-source heat pump and discrete, secondary double glazing is also planned. These initiatives will make the chapel environmentally and economically sustainable.

We will now begin fundraising to raise c.£1.3 million required to make these improvements.

With thanks to our funders
